This week, I started a new project. It all began when my sister-in-law showed me some holiday stockings she had from when she was a kid and asked if I could knit something similar for my niece and my brother so their family could have matching stockings. I haven’t been knitting much lately, but I thought, why not give it a shot?

This project is like an experiment, and who knows, it might turn out to be something we can actually use. The tricky part for me was that I haven’t really done color work before, so it will be a bit of a challenge. First things first, I gathered up all the stuff I’d need. I ran to the store to get three giant skeins of yarn in the colors red, white and green as well as some knitting needles. I chose to use some clear acrylic needles with gold glitter in them to really get me in the mood for this holiday knitting project.

We had a chat about different patterns on Ravelry and how I could tweak them to match those old stockings. Afterwards, I modified an existing pattern and charted out the design on graph paper. I also talked to my husband to figure out a way to knit it that matches my skills and won’t need any steam blocking to lie flat.

I’m using a modified version of this pattern and I’ve already finished the ribbing, the name plate, and I’m halfway through the first motif panel.
